These discounts provide additional savings for businesses and can be used as incentives for employees. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of using loyalty discounts with fuel cards and how businesses can maximise their savings. We’ll discuss different types of loyalty discounts, such as rewards programs and cashback offers, and explain how to enrol in these programs to start reaping the benefits.
Fuel Card Loyalty Discount Schemes in New Zealand
Most if not all fuel retailers in New Zealand offer some sort of discount and loyalty or rewards program. You don’t always have to be a fuel card holder to make use of these rewards either. Discounts and rewards programs differ from retailer to retailer, but here are some of the rewards programs from the biggest fuel retailers in NZ:
Z and Caltex Pump Rewards Program
As a fuel card holder, you are eligible for a daily fuel discount of 6 cents per litre when you fill up at any Z or Caltex petrol station. This discount can be redeemed by scanning your card during the payment process, whether in-store or at the pump.
Meanwhile, Wednesdays are Super Pumped Days where you can get bigger savings.
Save 10c per litre of fuel when you fill up on Wednesday. Or spend $40 or more and stack your 10c per litre discount for bigger savings later. Make sure you have the Z App to keep track of all your savings.
Furthermore, by using your fuel card, you will also be able to earn your usual Fly Buys or Airpoints Dollars. If you are not currently a member of the Fly Buys or Airpoints loyalty program, you can easily sign up online and start taking advantage of these savings today.
Note: Fuel discount applies to the first 50 litres only, and a minimum $40 spend applies when stacking. Stacked balances expire at the end of the month following the month in which they were earned. This offer excludes fuel card and Sharetank purchases.
BP & G.A.S AA Smartfuel Program
The AA Smartfuel program allows you to take advantage of fuel savings at BP and G.A.S service stations. It’s free to join, and all you need to do is grab a AA Smartfuel card from any of the program’s partners, such as bp, GAS, and Countdown, or use your existing AA Membership card. The program can be accessed digitally by downloading the AA Smartfuel app.
By shopping normally at any of the program’s 1,200+ retail partners, you can accumulate fuel discounts by swiping your card or scanning your app with each qualifying purchase. To redeem the accumulated discounts, it is important to fill up at bp or GAS, where the discounts can be applied to each litre of fuel. The discounts can only be applied to up to 50 litres of fuel and can also be redeemable for other rewards instantly.
Any savings must be redeemed by the end of the following calendar month before they expire. Members of the AA Smartfuel program will occasionally have the opportunity to receive an additional 10 cents off per litre of fuel, which you’d receive an email about the day before.
Note: As a bonus, Contact Energy customers can receive an additional 30 cents off per litre of fuel, once every month.
Mobil Smiles Driver Rewards Program
With the Mobile Smiles Driver Program, every time you fill up with fuel or buy other things at participating Mobil stations, you earn points that you can redeem for discounts on fuel, in-store purchases and other rewards. Also, there’s no minimum spend required on fuel, with discounts valid up to 100 litres (excl. LPG). Plus, you’ll get access to exclusive offers and discounts.
To get started, just grab a rewards card by signing up on the Mobil Smiles website or at your local Mobil station. Once you have the card, just link it to your account and every time you make a purchase, your points balance will be updated automatically. You can check your balance and redeem your rewards through the Mobil Smiles website or at participating Mobil stations.
Gull’s Discount Day Promotion
If you regularly buy fuel at Gull – or even if you don’t – you can still take advantage of Gull’s Discount Day promo. The deal changes month to month, but usually, you can save a few cents per litre on your purchase.
There are some fine print things to keep in mind like, the discount may only apply to a certain number of litres and there might be a minimum purchase requirement. Also, the promotion may vary by location, so it’s always good to check with the store or Gull website or social media for the most up-to-date info. All you have to do to find out which day the discount day promo is, is sign up online with your name, email and mobile.
My Challenge Rewards Program
As a My Challenge member, you can receive an everyday fuel discount. As a standard card holder, you’ll receive a minimum discount of 6 cents per litre every day. SuperGold and Grey Power card holders receive an even better deal with a minimum discount of 8 cents per litre everyday. Some South Island stores offer a discount of up to 12 cents per litre, but it may vary by location. Just keep in mind that the discount only applies up to a maximum of 100 litres for all cards.
From time to time, Challenge also gives members an extra treat with a boosted fuel discount. If they have your email address and you have subscribed to receive marketing from Challenge, they’ll let you know about it the day before the offer.
Customers can also earn My Challenge points, which can be redeemed for in-store rewards. You earn 1 Point for every $1 spent on eligible purchases at participating Challenge retailers.

NPD’s Discount Days
You can access fuel discounts by using the SuperGold Card at participating manned NPD sites and through NPD’s Discount Days promotion. You can sign up for email and/or text alerts and receive notifications about discounts and promotions at NPD self-serve sites, also you can use fuel dockets from any supermarkets to enjoy discounts of up to 12 cents per litre.
Waitomo’s App & Prizes Program
If you’re a Waitomo shopper, when you spend more than $20 or more on one transaction (whether that’s fuel or in-store products), you can unlock Waitomo’s spinning wheel for a chance to win prizes and fuel discounts. Not to mention customers who reach monthly targets unlock a scratchie for bigger wins. All you have to do is download the Waitomo app, spend $20 and start spinning to win.
